Overexposure to silica has often been linked to an incurable lung condition called silicosis. Sometimes fatal, silicosis is common among construction workers.

Excessive levels of a dangerous dust particle that can lead to debilitating health conditions and death were found in air samples taken at the Second Avenue subway construction site during a federal safety inspection, according to documents obtained by The New York Post (3/23/2012)

The sample was taken the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on November 9.

According to the agency’s report, the underground air sample contained more than three times the permissible level of toxic dust particles called silica.

“Overexposure to silica has often been linked to an incurable lung condition called silicosis. Sometimes fatal, silicosis is common among construction workers,” explained David Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and a lecturer on construction accident law.

The American Lung Association estimates that two million workers in the U.S. are occupationally exposed to silica dusts.

Each year over 200 U.S. construction workers die with silicosis while hundreds more become disabled, according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics.

“Lung damage from silicosis is permanent. This makes prevention extremely important for the safety of construction workers in New York,” construction accident lawyer David Perecman said. “It is an employer’s legal responsibility to provide a safe workplace. Construction workers who think they are not protected should call OSHA.”

As New York construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm know, crystalline silica is classified as a human lung carcinogen. Exposures to crystalline silica are addressed in specific standards for the construction industry by OSHA.
