As seen from the scaffold accident caused by bricks, older buildings may have a number of hidden faults.

Last week a 61-year-old man was killed after lightning struck one of the steeples atop the Christ Church in Cobble Hill and brought down bricks onto scaffolding, reported The New York Times. (8/1/2012). New York construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand the bricks caused part of the scaffold to collapse on the man as he was either walking by or standing under the scaffold.

Because of the lightning strike accident, construction workers had to remove four of the Brooklyn church's 70 foot tall stone steeples. Crews also had to take down part of the 117 foot tall bell tower, reported The New York Times. Construction accident lawyers at New York’s The Perecman Firm understand the reason for the demolition is that the top part of the 170 year old church is considered no longer structurally sound.

“I am saddened by the destruction of this beautiful Brooklyn landmark,” said David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm. “But at least it’s for a good reason which is to ensure that no one else gets hurt.”

Demolition of old buildings can be dangerous work in itself, said construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm, one of New York’s construction accident law firms. Demolition workers face the unknown every time they remove part of a building. Unapproved building modifications, hidden structural damage, and hazardous materials can all increase the risk of injury.

“As seen from the scaffold accident caused by bricks, older buildings may have a number of hidden faults. A modern building would likely not have been affected by a lightning strike in the same way,” said David Perecman, a New York construction accident lawyer for over 30 years.
