Trench collapses are some of the most serious New York construction site accidents. Soil may appear to be light, but it can weigh close to 2500 pounds per cubic yard.
New York, New York (PRWEB) March 06, 2012
Firefighters rescued a construction worker who was trapped for over an hour in dirt and debris following the collapse of a trench where he was working. The sides of the trench unexpectedly buried him up to his waist in the dirt, reported NY1 (3/3/2012).
“Happily, this was a successful rescue, because most trench collapses end in tragedy. In some cases, a construction worker is buried alive and crushed by the soil, a terrifying thought for anyone in New York construction,” lawyer David Perecman, a New York construction accident lawyer for over 30 years, said.
In the rescue effort, firefighters used a Con Edison vacuum truck to suck up some of the dirt trapping the construction worker, according to NY1.
“Trench collapses are some of the most serious New York construction site accidents,” said New York construction accident lawyer Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and a lecturer on construction accident law. “Soil may appear to be light, but it can weigh close to 2500 pounds per cubic yard.”
The man was in serious but stable condition following the rescue, The Wall Street Journal (12/2/2012) said.
Alarmingly, according to WPIX (3/2/2012), the construction site did not have a permit for work, nor did it have any of the required safety precautions necessary for the job.
“Victims of New York construction accident injuries caused by caused by inadequate safety precautions, faulty equipment and other negligent acts deserve financial compensation,” said New York construction accident lawyer Perecman.
