Luck was definitely with Davis. The fall accident was not fatal and the acid was diluted. He was most fortunate to have heroic colleagues.

Co-workers rescued a New Jersey roofer from a container of nitric acid, reported the New York Daily News (5/8/2012). The roofer, Martin Davis, was working on the roof of a pipe and tube manufacturer when it gave way. He plunged 40 feet through the partly collapsed roof and into the vat.

“His co-workers may likely have prevented a bad situation from turning deadly. They’re to be commended,” said New York construction accident lawyer Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and a lecturer on construction accident law.

The vat contained a 40 to 70 percent nitric acid solution used for cleaning metal tubing, said the New York Daily News. Davis was fully submerged in the solution, and could not get himself out.

New York construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand falls are one of the most common causes of workplace injuries. They're also a leading-cause of work-related deaths among construction workers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 646 workers, not all in construction, died from fall-related injuries in 2010, the most recent year data are available. Approximately 38% of the work-related fatal falls were from ladders or roofs.

Most workplace fatalities in 2010 occurred in the construction and transportation and warehousing industry sectors, according to the BLS. Construction had the highest number of fatal work injuries.

“Luck was definitely with Davis. The fall accident was not fatal and the acid was diluted. He was most fortunate to have heroic colleagues,” said New York construction accident lawyer Perecman.
