Calculating floor load is essential. Catastrophic failure can occur and a floor or roof collapses because of overloading.
New York, New York (PRWEB) September 18, 2012
One construction worker was killed and another was seriously injured when an apartment building under construction in Brooklyn collapsed. According to The New York Times (9/10/12), a third-story construction floor overloaded with building materials collapsed beneath the men and they fell 30 feet. New York construction accident lawyer David Perecman believes the accident was avoidable.
A bricklayer told The New York Times that workers had loaded four pallets of cinder blocks onto the third floor with a boom truck. When they set a fifth pallet down, the floor collapsed.
As New York construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand, all floors and roofs have structural design limits that limit the weight that can be placed on them.
“The weight of building materials can cause a roof or floor to collapse,” said David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York’s construction accident law firms. “Calculating floor load is essential. Catastrophic failure can occur and a floor or roof collapses because of overloading.”
The worker who died was 67 and had worked on the job for five months.
“Contractors and construction site managers have a duty to ensure a safe working environment and to properly train workers. If worksite injuries are caused by employers failing to create safe workplaces, those employers can and should be held responsible,” said Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and a lecturer on construction accident law.
