When babies are born, parents are relieved to see 10 finger and 10 toes. When negligence on the part of a medical professional affects this, it could be a case of a medical malpractice.

A nurse accidentally severed part of an infant’s pinky finger as she was trying to remove an IV, reported the New York Daily News (3/28/2012).

The incident occurred while three month old Selena Olguin was being released from the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center, two days after arriving with a high fever.

The nurse was trying to cut off tape that was attached to the baby’s IV, said the New York Daily News.

Selina was airlifted to another hospital where doctors attempted to reattach the severed portion of her finger, but they were unable to do so, reported the tabloid.
