New York, New York (PRWEB) April 03, 2012
A cable snapped on an elevator car sending a teen into a three story free-fall, reported the New York Daily News (3/30/2012).
“The cable is literally the elevator’s lifeline. If cables do snap, safety devices are supposed to kick in. Something catastrophic must usually occur for someone to experience a free-fall in an elevator,” said David Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer who has represented clients throughout New York who have been injured in elevator accidents.
According to the New York Daily News, Kenneth Lacen had boarded the elevator on the fifth floor of a Bronx apartment building. As the car neared the second floor, the cable split. Lacen “flew to the ceiling like he was in a rocket” as the car plunged into the basement.
Lacen suffered injuries to his head, neck, back and leg because of the elevator accident, the New York tabloid said.
“As the circumstances become clearer, building management, elevator manufacturers, and elevator maintenance companies may be held responsible for the elevator accident,” New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman said. “Every day many people depend on elevators. It is of critical importance that elevators are safe, reliable and in full compliance with safety codes and regulations.”
