More safety improvements are needed on the ferries to prevent personal injury accidents in New York.
New York, New York (PRWEB) May 02, 2012
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently issued an official press release (4/24/2012) explaining why the passenger ferry, Andrew J. Barberi slammed into a Staten Island terminal in 2010.
According to the NTSB, the New York crash was caused by a malfunction of equipment failure in one of the ferry's propulsion control panels. This "rendered one of the vessel's two propellers unresponsive to propulsion commands," said the NTSB press release.
“In the US traveling by ferry is far safer than traveling by car because ferries operate under specific procedures and safety standards. Apparently more safety improvements are needed on the ferries to prevent personal injury accidents in New York,” personal injury lawyer David Perecman said.
New York personal injury lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand ferry crewmembers did not realize that the propeller failed to respond to their commands until “seconds before” the ferry accident, as reported in the release. A total of 266 persons were onboard at the time of the New York ferry accident. Three passengers were seriously injured.
“Whether operator error, faulty equipment or negligence caused a person to suffer an injury or caused the death in a Staten Island ferry accident, the city or state may be held responsible,” New York personal injury lawyer Perecman said. “Every day thousands of people depend on the ferries. It is of critical importance that they are safe and reliable.”
