Oakland Stairlifts, a UK based stairlift supplier, discusses results of a study recently made into children living with disabilities at home by the Disabled Living Foundation.
Recently the Disabled Living Foundation undertook a study that revealed there are around 770,000 children under the age of 16 living at home with a disability in the UK. This is the equivalent of 1 in every 20 children having a disability in the country.
The Disabled Living Foundation charity provides information, training and impartial advice on disabilities and helping those who live with them. The charity is a founding member of the Information Standard and is recognised as one of the leading bodies in the independent living industry.
This is a shocking statistic that has been made all the more prominent by the fact that the Paralympics have only recently finished. For many people the Paralympics was the first time they had seen the different types of assistive technology that exist to aid those with disabilities.
Stair lifts are often associated with the elderly, but the Disabled Living Foundation study shows that there are a number of young people in the UK with disabilities who could benefit from assisted living items such as a stair lift.
A Spokesperson from Oakland Stairlifts added, “Many people don’t realise the amount of assistive technologies that are available for those with disabilities. There are now aids such as blades that Paralympian runners wear if they are missing part of the lower leg or foot that means they can compete on a similar level to Olympic sprinters.”
While the study made by the Disabled Living Foundation shows a high percentage of children with disabilities, there are many different technologies available to help them. Oakland Stairlifts supply a wide range of products including children’s stairlifts. These are perfect for helping children with disabilities get around their home with ease if the stairs present quite a big challenge for them.
