On June 21, obstacle racing series Spartan Race discusses Frank Fumich and Matt Nelson’s 450 mile run from Virginia to Massachusetts to deliver $81,100 raised to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The duo organized a fundraiser to support the Richard family, who tragically lost their son Martin, and Jeff Bauman, a runner who was seriously injured in the explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday, April 15, 2013.
According to the Spartan blog, Nelson and Fumich’s run “was marred by high temps, heavy traffic, and some issues with navigation and added mileage. Fumich, no stranger to ultra events, admitted that this event was brutal and grueling for the five days it took to complete,” even with their previous marathon and obstacle racing experience. Their trek ended at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, where Larry Marchese, a representative of Martin Richard’s family, and Erin Hurley, the girlfriend of Bauman, greeted them. They then went to a family barbecue where they met both Bauman and Carlos Arredondo, the man who helped Bauman after he was injured in the blast.
Fumich reflected on the long journey to Boston and said, “I…want to say a sincere thank you to all my friends, acquaintances, and total strangers who reached out and sent such nice comments, posts, and messages throughout our journey!”
Spartan Race CEO and co-founder Joe De Sena comments on the fundraiser. “We are proud to see these two athletes use their abilities to help a greater cause. Frank Fumich and Matt Nelson should be applauded for their efforts.”
