American Inventor Harnesses Energy from Ocean Waves
Using his ocean energy converters, a Houston-based entrepreneur is converting ocean wave energy into electricity.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 2, 2007 -- With worldwide consumption of oil, natural gas and coal expected to skyrocket in coming years, many renewable energy advocates are pushing for the immediate implementation of alternative solutions to help avert a major energy crisis. One such method includes wave energy and using this unique process, a Houston-based businessman has developed a way to efficiently produce electricity.
"People have been trying to perfect ocean energy technology for 150 years," said Chris Olson, owner and president of Swell Fuel. "We have come up with a method that is simple, inexpensive and it works."
Using a lever operated pivoting float anchored to the ocean floor, Swell Fuel's ocean energy converters are designed to withstand pounding waves. The wave motion triggers the movement of the lever, which in turn produces electricity. The company's goal is to generate 350,000 kW per year per unit and link together multiple units, providing a significant source of electricity.
With one patent already granted and several awaiting approval, Olson foresees an immediate need for his invention, particularly in developing areas of the world. In fact, his technology has already been licensed in five countries, with several others expressing strong interest.
"The initial response has been overwhelming," he said. "People in coastal areas are pleading for this kind of technology."
Olson's invention comes after years of frustrations and challenges, which included ocean testing over 30 different prototypes. He says the growing pains were necessary and has led to the perfection of his device, which is ready to be built on a much larger scale.
"This is not a theoretical concept--these units are already making electricity and need to go in the water and provide power for those who need it," noted Olson.
Olson does not anticipate near-term interest in the United States but expects continued demand from other countries. A "use it or lose it" policy will be implemented, allowing others to take advantage of the opportunity if licensees fail to put the technology to use.
Despite the exciting developments in recent months, Olson has remained humble and level-headed about the prospects of shaking up the alternative energy sector.
"We're not the only solution available. We're just a piece of the puzzle and I feel blessed to be a part of it," he concluded.
