The report was created using both local data provided by the Omaha Police Department and federal resources such as the FBI Uniform Crime Report. The current Omaha crime statistics are preliminary at this time, however they do give insight on how crime rates could trend in the coming year compared to the 2011 stats.

The Omaha crime report examines both property crime and violent crime within the city.

Criminal Homicide

Aggravated Assault
As of February 29, 2012 – 164 /    As of February 28, 2011 - 138

Robbery -
As of February 29, 2012 – 84     /    As of February 28, 2011 - 112

Forcible Rape
As of February 29, 2012 – 23     /    As of February 28, 2011 - 27

Burglary
As of February 29, 2012 – 514     /    As of February 28, 2011 - 489

Motor Vehicle Theft
As of February 29, 2012 – 336     /    As of February 28, 2011 - 473

Larceny - Theft
As of February 29, 2012 – 1,889 /    As of February 28, 2011 – 1,596

There has been a 4% decrease in violent crime during the few months of 2012 compared to the same time period in 2011. However, there has a 7% increase in property crime. The most significant decreases were in homicide (-50%) and motor vehicle theft (-29%) offenses. These same trends hold true when compared to 2010.

The city of Omaha is split up into 4 precincts which are listed below.

  •     Northwest
  •     Northeast
  •     Southwest
  •     Southeast

Currently the city is looking for a new chief of police while combatting crime in the city. It will be Mayor Jim Suttle’s task to choose the chief once a panel has narrowed the 69 candidates down to only five.
