Onderko Motorsports quest for a National Championship ends with transmission failure at Mid-Ohio

Justin Onderko gets ready to qualifying.

As soon as I hit 3rd gear I knew it was gone ... I felt the shudder and then heard the grinding.

The Onderko Motorsports race team headed into Mid-Ohio on the wings of 5 wins and the hopes of a National Championship which ended abruptly at the entrance of turn 3 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course when Onderko down shifted into 3rd gear and felt a horrifying shudder.

“As soon as I hit 3rd gear I knew it was gone.” Onderko remarked “I felt the shudder and then heard the grinding. I got the car back to the garage and let our engineers know what happened.”
The team’s engineers began accessing the damage to the OC2interactive/Onderko Motorsports #131’s transmission. The team worked feverously through the night; several calls were made back to the shop checking on parts and flights to have parts brought in to Mid-Ohio.

Team Owner Michael Onderko commented on the situation, “We are trying everything we know to get the car back on the track. We have the best engineers working on the problem right now and two days to get ready for Sunday’s race. I am confident we will be ready.”

Saturday morning as the sun rose over the hills of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Race Course the announcement to the media came from Michael Onderko, Team Owner of Onderko Motorsports, “Our engineers have determined that the severity of the damage to the OC2interactive/Onderko Motorsports #131’s transmission is un-repairable. I want to thank all of our sponsors, especially Martin O’Conner, CEO of OC2 Interactive Web Designs for all their support and our newest addition to the Onderko Motorsports Race Team who just came on board this past Thursday, the Motorsports Rehabilitation Foundation which is dedicated to providing assistance to race drivers injured or deceased during sanctioned motorsports event. Motorsports Rehabilitation Foundation assists race drivers and their families with the financial burdens that often occur with medical injuries or death.”

The rising road racing star summed up this week’s activities, “As a race driver you always access what you have done and what you could have done better or different. I know when the car was pulled from the hauler it was prepared as best as it could be. It’s frustrating that you have no control over mechanical issues.” Onderko continued, “In this business, with such high tolerances on parts and the abuse they get, parts break. It is part of the game we chose to play. Our engineers will find out what happened, regroup and get us back on the track. This is just one race in the series. We are still in a great position to win the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. We may be out of this race but by no means done.”
