Banker and Philanthropist Donald Adam Donates $20 Million for Melanoma Research
Melanoma is the fastest-growing cancer in the United States.
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) July 21, 2008 -- Chairman and chief executive of Tampa-based American Momentum Bank, Donald Adam has a personal motivation behind his recent $20 million gift to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. Adam is a melanoma survivor and chose Moffit for the new research center because it sees more than 1,500 new melanoma patients annually, according to a May 2007 article in the Tampa Bay Business Journal. Moffit is considered one of the top three cancer centers, based on volume. The donation is the largest single gift in Moffit's history.
Melanoma is the fastest-growing cancer in the United States, with Florida ranking second in the nation in the number of cases, cited Dr. William Dalton, president and chief executive of Moffit, in a release.
As part of an elite group of National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Care Centers, Moffit focuses on the development of early stage translational research aimed at rapid translation of scientific discoveries to benefit patient care.
Adam's gift, made in 2007, will fund almost entirely the first five years of research and development at the new center. Continuing and future endeavors include recruiting new researchers, conducting clinical trials on new cancer drugs, and the Melanoma Genomics Project, research of the disease conducted on the molecular level.
