For many, choosing a life of adventure is incompatible with making a living. But for one psychotherapist and counsellor, known as the “sailing therapist”, mobile internet technology is enabling a better work/life balance with her online video counselling practice.

As my video counselling practise grows, opportunities are opening up for travel. I love sailing and its challenges; the weather can change fast at sea and you never know what you will see next. Last week we saw pods of dolphins and basking sharks...

Based on a 43 foot (13 metre) Bruce Roberts yacht, Bernadette Brady Lockwood is now able to run her Skype counselling and psychotherapy practice on the move. Currently based in Plymouth’s Barbican, with a counselling practice in Exeter and Truro, the yacht has become the base for a growing online counselling service.

“At the moment, as well as offering face to face appointments in three centres throughout Devon and Cornwall, I can also offer online counselling services to anybody worldwide. Mobile technology means I can even see clients up to 3 miles out at sea using mobile Internet! We’re planning to invest in satellite technology which will mean I can provide video counselling services from practically anywhere in the world.” said the psychotherapist.

With over 8 years of training and clinical experience, Bernadette offers psychotherapy and counselling for a wide range of problems such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, eating disorders, phobias and illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder.

The benefits of online counselling services are clear: there is no need to travel long distances to appointments which makes it flexible for busy people as well as those who live in rural areas or are housebound. In addition, British expats who are unable to access English speaking counselling services could find the service useful.

Those seeking counselling can receive professional help in the comfort and privacy of their own home: “Online counselling is particularly useful because of the “dis-inhibition effect”. People often find it easier to express their feelings when they are talking to someone by video online.” said the psychotherapist. “The dis-inhibition effect can mean that it’s easier to share difficult feelings and work towards a solution.”

Bernadette offers face to face counselling services in Plymouth, Exeter and Truro in Devon and Cornwall. But her plans include sailing the Atlantic Raleigh for Cruisers within the next three or four years. “As my video counselling practise grows, opportunities are opening up for travel further afield. I love sailing and its challenges; the weather can change fast at sea and you never know what you will see next. Last week we saw pods of dolphins and basking sharks – extraordinary sights we’ve been very lucky to witness.”

Face to face and online counselling costs are £40 per session. “Prior to beginning online counselling it’s important to make sure that you are suitable and it’s going to work for you.” Potential clients are advised to contact Bernadette and discuss their suitability before making an appointment.
