College degree specialists, Suffield University, is pleased to announce the redesign and update of its website at SuffieldUniversity.org. Since 1997, Suffield University has been helping busy professionals prepare themselves for a better future by offering online degree programs.

“Many working adults feel they have missed out on opportunities because they do not have a college degree,” says Gerald Becker, President of Suffield University. “Our programs offer the chance for busy, working adults to obtain an online degree through a variety of programs. We also take into account prior education, training and life experiences.”

The Prior Learning program at Suffield University recognizes learning that has taken place in both formal and informal settings: from classes at community college, to credits earned from a four-year college, work experience, community work and professional training programs.

The National Distance Learning Accreditation Council (N.D.L.A.C.) grants credit for prior learning. N.D.L.A.C. accreditation standards are designed to allow flexibility to programs that seek to provide quality education using innovative methods.

“Granting credit for prior learning is one such method. Nontraditional students often bring to the classroom knowledge and experiences that have been acquired through other avenues,” says President Becker. “The N.D.L.A.C. encourages programs to explore and develop ways to credit such individuals for the learning that they have acquired in nontraditional settings.”

The Portfolio Assessment Process allows students to apply for college credit based on life experience. Each application is reviewed by Suffield’s Assessment Committee.

Here is how it works:

  • Fill out a secured application, listing all learning experiences
  • Assemble a portfolio that includes work examples, training certificates, licenses, results of evaluations and any other documents that support those experiences
  • A trained evaluation committee member then reviews and assesses the portfolio
  • The outcome of this assessment is sent within 24-48 hours by e-mail
