The statistic that the Australian online marketing industry knew had to come soon has finally arrived, Online advertising spending in Australia is now greater than Newspaper advertising. In a report released by the CEASA(Commercial Economic Advisory Service Australia) in the first half of 2012,$1.63 billion was spent on online advertising compared to $1.5 billion with the newspaper industry.

Online advertising is now within a whisker of becoming the number one advertising channel in Australia as only free to air TV, comprising Channel 7,9,10 and SBS generate more ad revenue, with $1.65 billion in the first half of 2012. The market share of online advertising in Australia is now 24.2%, a substantial increase compared to the 18.5% market share it had last year.
Twigg says "What is more surprising is that TV and Newspapers have managed to keep a competitive market share so long. Neither industry seems to be understanding that unless their clients make money from their advertising it is likely to cease. Innovation is totally lacking and they are reliant on major events like the Olympics to keep revenue flowing. I think the next 12 months could see the tipping point and i wouldn't be surprised to see Online at 30-35% market share by this time next year with Newspaper and TV at 20ish %."
