One of the largest sites for online user reviews and comments is Yelp. Since its founding in San Francisco in 2004, Yelp has collected over 40 million reviews which are accessed by its 78 million monthly users in the United States and in 19 other countries around the globe. Yelp users can search for local businesses and read and write reviews of them through their website, or via their mobile applications.
TripAdvisor is one of the main competitors to Yelp. TripAdvisor specifically focuses on reviews of businesses relating to the travel industry, especially hotels, airlines, tourist sights, restaurants, and nightspots. Previously owned by travel booker Expedia, TripAdvisor was spun off in 2011, and TripAdvisor claims to be the largest travel-related social media company, with more than 100 million unique visitors having used their services.
