It started with a passion for finding the best online coupons and deals, but led to a new web site Couponers.com that helps others do the same. Many people are using coupons to save gas money and cut costs, which means coupons are suddenly popular again.
Using coupons has been popular for much longer for Couponers.com founder Bryan Gray. He and his wife loved finding great deals and sharing them with friends. But the idea turned into a business after Gray and his wife saw the savings firsthand.
"About 4 years ago my wife and I decided to buy as many presents as possible online to avoid the traffic and malls and find online discounts instead. We ended up saving almost 20% off what we would have paid retail with local taxes by using coupons and free shipping offers. I've been a big fan of finding the best deals online since," says Gray, who started making websites as a hobby in 2002.
Once Gray started to make more on his web sites than he did as a manager of a large oil company he quit his full-time job to manage Couponers.com and his other sites.
Each day Gray and his team of editors add at least 100 new online coupons to the site and his editor's picks that are rotated daily and highlight the best deals. The site features online coupons from over 750 different stores, with many more coming. Even though the web has many online coupon sites, Couponers.com makes finding and searching for online coupons easier.
"Many of the online coupon and deal sites are difficult to use. It's tough to find expiration dates. We wanted to make a site and list as many deals as possible every day, organize them, and make it easy to search," says Gray.
Each deal clearly states the expiration date. The site can be searched on deals only, coupons only, or for the most popular deals/coupons by number of visits or by user Rating. After a deal/coupon has been expired for 10 days it is deleted from the site as many retailers extend expired coupons for a week and sometimes more. Users can rate the deals and state if they worked.
Here are the top 5 benefits of using online coupons:
1. No sales tax (in most states)
2. Many online stores run free shipping offers
3. Using online coupons saves gas costs driving to stores
4. Online coupons save money in addition to already lower prices online - online stores often charge less because there is less overhead, and combined with coupons or discounts means getting the best possible deal
5. Saves travel time and time looking for deals in newspapers, mail, and other ways of finding coupons or deals.
To find the best deals online, Gray says to compare all available offers. "Sometimes a store will have a 20% off coupon running at the same time as a 10% off coupon with free shipping. Even if there is a great deal on the home page of a site, still search for the merchant or product name to be sure you're getting the best possible deal," says Gray.
The savings often depend on the cost of the item. There are coupons for all kinds of products, from baby products to high tech electronics.
Couponers.com launched in Summer 2008, to help people save money with online coupons and deals. The site will expand to include many web 2.0 features so people can share, tag, and discuss coupons. Owner Bryan Gray started in the online industry in 2000 when researching how to buy a domain name. He now owns over 7000 domain names. His first site also started out as a hobby -- collecting sports cards. He eventually sold that site to focus on Couponers and his other web sites.
