For the third year running, the online education search company participated in the Wasatch Back route of last weekend’s Ragnar Relay series.

DRAPER, Utah (Vocus) June 21, 2010 -- The Wasatch Mountain Range surged with activity June 18 and 19 as relay teams ran from Logan to Park City, Utah. The annual race features teams of 12 individuals running a total of 188 miles. DegreeSearch.org, a referral business for students interested in receiving an online degree, completed the course for the third year in a row.

“There are 12 runners per team and each person runs in order, one through 12 and then back to one,” said Alan Whitaker, co-founder of DegreeSearch.org. “Each leg is between three to eight miles long, and even though it is challenging we always get a lot out of it.”

In the past, participation in the Ragnar Relay has even helped the company sift through potential employees.

“When we first met Ronny Bjarnason, our senior scientist, he told us he was a marathoner. So, we scheduled the interview during the week of the relay,” Whitaker said. “We’ve actually had more than one employee run with us before we hired them. It’s a great way to get to know someone.”

This year, the team consisted of four employees, with the other eight positions filled by spouses, friends and associates. For the company that offers many different online degree programs, this helped develop a unified culture of excellence, improvement and mastery.

“The sense of challenge and accomplishment that we felt when we crossed that finish line was worth all the hard work,” Whitaker said. “We’ve bonded as a company, and just as we strive for excellence in our work, we were able to master the mountain.”
