I think everyone in attendance will have more reason to contemplate the importance of driving instructors and keeping our roads safe.

The DOL Driver Training School (DTS) Fall 2011 Workshop was held in September at the state capital in Olympia and featured Phil Goodman, from the SWERVE Driving School. He presented to other driving school owners and driving instructors in the state of Washington on the subject of how they hire, train, and retain instructors for online drivers ed classes.

Driving instructors are one of the largest investments for any driver’s education program, and the goal of the presentation was to offer the new ideas and lessons that Phil has learned through his years as an instructor. The stated objectives of the presentation were to help companies have a greater return on their investment by offering information on how to hire the right driving instructor, how to structure a training program for success, and how to retain their new instructors after investing so much into them.

“I believe I motivated those who attended to hire well and train better,” said Phil Goodman after the presentation. “I think everyone in attendance will have more reason to contemplate the importance of driving instructors and keeping our roads safe.”

Philip Goodman started his career with SWERVE Driving School in 2007 as an instructor. He later moved on to serve in the role of Service Delivery Manager where he manages three full-time instructors and over 50 part-time instructors. He has also trained more than 50 new instructors over the past three years and was responsible for creating new policies and procedures that impacted the company’s training program.

Goodman said his purpose at the DOL presentation was to teach others how to hire and train the right individuals to help grow their online drivers ed course and increase the amount of collision-free for life drivers.

“The Department of Licensing was very appreciative of the message I conveyed,” Goodman said. “And the instructors in the audience commented on the passion and professionalism at SWERVE Driving School. I was very grateful to have been a part of this workshop.”
