100 Best Companies to Work For
St. Louis (Vocus) January 23, 2009
Scottrade, a leading branch-supported online investment firm, has been ranked No. 60 on FORTUNE's 12th annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list. This is the firm's second consecutive appearance on the list; it ranked 58th in 2008.
The full list and related stories will appear in the Feb. 2 issue of FORTUNE, be available on newsstands Jan. 26 and is now at FORTUNE.com/bestcompanies. A driving factor for this year's list is how the featured companies excel in creating jobs - 73 of the 100, including Scottrade, are hiring.
- Scottrade has the seventh highest rate of job growth among companies on the list that are hiring. The firm currently has 2,500 associates nationwide--a 24 percent increase from a year ago.
- The company is on course to open an additional 40 branch offices across the country in 2009. It also plans to fill more than 150 information technology positions in St. Louis.
- Of the 100 companies on the list, six have never had layoffs, including Scottrade.
- The firm has maintained quarterly bonuses that have been paid for more than 20 years.
- At its headquarters in St. Louis and in 391 branch offices across the country, Scottrade offers associates many unique benefits, including a Wellness Reimbursement Assistance Program and Charitable Giving program.
"It is truly an honor to be recognized as one of America's best places to work two years in a row and to be named among some of the other great employers on the list," said Rodger Riney, Scottrade founder, president and CEO. "Our associates' dedication to customer service has been the foundation of our success for nearly 30 years, and their passion for what we do has made Scottrade a great place to work."
"We plan to hire 400 to 500 associates across the country this year," said Jane Wulf, Scottrade chief administrative officer. "We also strive to provide opportunities for our associates. In 2008, we promoted more than 650 associates, a 26 percent increase in promotions from 2007."
"At my former company, if you took the time to provide customer service, it wasn't going to help you meet your goals," said Susan Lushing, a stockbroker in Woodland Hills, Calif. "Now it's my job to help people. That makes you believe in your company more. I can tell people, 'I'm here to make things easier for you.'"
"The key thing here is that there is a sincere sense of caring on the part of our associates that carries through to our customers," said Kevin Dodson, director of online financial services. "This has been true from day one when Rodger picked up the phone, to now when we have almost 400 branch managers."
"I knew things would be different just from the job interview," said Javier Orozco, a stockbroker in Valencia, Calif. "They wanted to get to know me. They asked me what I wanted for my future. They wanted to be sure that I would fit in and be happy here."
About FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For"
To pick the "100 Best Companies to Work for," FORTUNE works with Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute, a global research and consulting firm with offices in 30 countries, to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. More than 81,000 employees from 353 companies responded to the 57-question survey created by the Institute. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the survey, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees. The remaining third is based on a company's responses to the Culture Audit questionnaire, which asks detailed questions about demographics, pay and benefits, and open-ended questions on philosophy, communication and more.
