"HighBeam is highly regarded for bringing users credible, high-quality information on the open Web," said Patrick C. Sommers, President, Gale. "As a partner and content provider, Gale has worked closely with HighBeam for many years. We've been impressed with their reach, extensive knowledge of users, and their ability to introduce new consumers to authoritative information.

"The acquisition of HighBeam is a natural extension of our user-focused strategy. Gale has had a presence on the open Web for many years now, particularly with AccessMyLibrary, which brings users from search engines into a library environment to explore their vast content riches. Now, with the added expertise of HighBeam, Gale will have a greater opportunity to learn more about user behavior and research trends, and will use that information to further develop and enhance the user experience for all our products" said Sommers.

Patrick Spain, HighBeam founder, said, "This transaction will benefit HighBeam's customers, business partners and employees by bringing substantially more scale to the HighBeam business. Gale's financial strength, vast content repositories and market presence will allow HighBeam to expand more rapidly and broadly, while HighBeam's employees will benefit from being part of a large, sophisticated global organization. The HighBeam team is excited about becoming part of the Gale family."

HighBeam operations will remain in Chicago. Customer service and technical support contacts will remain unchanged for customers. More information is available at www.highbeam.com.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
