Two new courses from online healthcare CE provider Care2Learn highlight the risks and regulations associated with the use of restraints in post-acute care settings and provide essential information about protecting patients and healthcare staff.

The use of restraints in post-acute care facilities is a delicate and hotly debated subject, which makes it all the more important for healthcare workers to fully understand when and why they’re necessary.

Care2Learn, Inc., the leader in online healthcare continuing education and training for post-acute care professionals, announced this month the release of two new CE courses focusing on the use of restraints in post-acute facilities. Avoiding the Use of Restraints (1366) and Restraints, Seclusion, and the 1-hour Evaluation (1367) help caregivers understand what restraints are and when they are needed, as well as alternative treatment methods to ensure optimal patient well being.

“The use of restraints in post-acute care facilities is a delicate and hotly debated subject,” says General Manager and VP of Enterprise Sales for Care2learn Ryan Sparks. “…which makes it all the more important for healthcare workers to fully understand when and why they’re necessary, what the alternatives are, as well as the regulations involved and how to document their use. We’re really pleased to be able to offer these courses to our caregivers so they can provide the best possible care for their patients.”

Avoiding the Use of Restraints is a one-hour course developed by Sharon Wexler PhD, RN, BC. It identifies the risk behaviors associated with the use of restraints, the assessments designed to identify the underlying causes of the behavior, and the alternatives to using restraints.

Restraints, Seclusion, and the 1-hour Evaluation discusses in detail the Joint Commission standards and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulations that apply to the 1-hour face-to-face evaluation for violent or self-destructive patient behavior. Written by Renee John Repique MS, RN, this 1-hour course also describes the clinical criteria for restraint/seclusion discontinuation and proper documentation and reporting requirements.
