2012 Christmas sales are set to smash all time high records.

According to research by PwC and Frost & Sullivan released earlier this year, throughout 2012 9.6 million Australians aged over 15 years will make online shopping purchases. Over the next twelve month period, it is expected that 88 percent of online consumers in Australia will continue or increase their online spending, signifying that there is solid growth in online shopping.

What may come as a surprise from this is that online shopping is not just for the young; with research done by the Centre of excellence for Creative Industries at Swinburne University of Technology reporting that shoppers aged 50 to 64 years boosted their online monthly spend within the past four years from $157 to $258.

Add together these optimistic figures with the Christmas holidays fast approaching, and online retail companies are smiling from ear to ear. Director of the online retail store, ‘My Favourite’ Phoebe Olsen says the growth in online sales is an exciting time for business owners like herself.

“There’s a big buzz in the online space knowing that online retail shopping is on the rise.” Phoebe says. “It also means the online retail environment is getting more and more competitive, and those who want to stay on top must have a unique edge.”

On average, Australian’s spend $206 a month online and shop more regularly than most people in other countries. However, there still remains good news for retailers, with a high volume of virtual window shoppers that continue to take their business to the traditional retailer.
