I think it might actually be a contestant for the most beautiful openback banjo in the world. I don't know another which has quite such warmth and glow about it, and this is combined with such painstaking attention to detail.

The Islander Ash Leaf is the first banjo to be produced by UK retailer Banjos Direct under its recently announced Islander Banjos label. The Ash Leaf, with its unusual ash-block rim combined with birds eye maple neck is a strikingly attractive instrument, suitable for clawhammer and frailing styles, as well as for old-time fingerpicking styles.
Founder and CEO of Banjos Direct and Islander Banjos, Simon Middleton, said: "I think it might actually be a contestant for the most beautiful openback banjo in the world. I don't know another which has quite such warmth and glow about it, and this is combined with such painstaking attention to detail."
Islander Banjos are believed to be the only production banjo makers active in England.
"There are individual craft makers who produce individual banjos on commission, but with Islander we are trying to do something a little different, which is to produce small-run manufactured banjos which are of superb quality but a little more affordable that commissioning an individual instrument," added Simon Middleton.
The Islander Ash Leaf openback was designed and made for Banjos Direct by Brighton-based maker Malcolm McLeod.
"Malcolm is a brilliant craftsman, and typical of the quality and integrity of maker with whom we want to work as we expand our range of instruments," added Middleton.
The company has plans to raise further funding to increase its retail presence and to extend its manufacturing activity.
The Islander Ash Leaf OB banjo is available now, exclusively from Banjos Direct at a retail price of £1695.00
