Today, Optima Juris opened its doors as a new breed of “Global Small Business” focused on operating in international markets. As the world’s first court reporting agency to provide services exclusively outside of the United States, Optima Juris has embraced a global business outlook to achieve growth during a time when larger domestic agencies are being forced into bankruptcy.

Nearly all U.S. lawyers involved in court cases must take depositions, which are formal procedures to obtain testimony from witnesses. To organize these depositions, lawyers look to court reporting agencies. Steadily declining profits have hit many large and established U.S. court reporting agencies very hard in recent months.

The September 8th, 2011, bankruptcy of Alexander Gallo Holdings LLC, one of the largest U.S. providers of deposition services, shook the industry and highlighted the shrinking fortunes of traditional agencies operating within the U.S. market. These trends have encouraged the founders of Optima Juris to focus their efforts on creating a smaller, nimbler court reporting agency that operates exclusively outside of the country, where lawyers face a growing need to obtain testimony from non U.S.-based witnesses.

Headquartered in Orange County, California, and with eight field offices in such far-flung locales as Dubai, Hong Kong, Paris, and Johannesburg, Optima Juris helps U.S. law firms, lawyers and domestic court reporting agencies organize local and cost effective solutions for depositions taking place overseas. Technological innovations like email and Skype video conferencing have made it possible for a small business like Optima Juris, which has only six full-time employees, to operate globally for the first time in history.

Internationally-recognized Global Deposition Expert Ian Hardy started Optima Juris after many years of living and working abroad as a legal videographer in Paris, France. The California native saw that depositions taking place outside of the United States were growing year by year as the U.S. legal industry embraced globalization. He was quick to notice that operating margins, which were steadily shrinking for services rendered in the U.S., have stayed healthy for services provided abroad.

Ian said, “When I was working in Paris, I was able to see up close and personal what it takes to set up a deposition in a foreign country. By creating Optima Juris, we will fill a current void in the legal services industry, and take advantage of global market dynamics where demand is increasingly coming from outside the United States. As a small company, we could never have done this without new technologies such as Skype and our proprietary operations and scheduling software, which is completely Internet-based and accessible from anywhere.”

As a firm believer in serving the legal community, Ian set up Optima Juris to provide free information for lawyers and court reporting agencies through blog articles and complimentary consultations with its cadre of Global Deposition Experts. Global Deposition Experts are specially trained consultants working for Optima Juris who guide clients through the requirements for setting up their depositions in any country in the world. Nothing like this has ever been offered to the legal services industry before, and up until recently it would not have been possible for such a small, niche enterprise.

Ian feels that his company has settled on a unique and largely undeveloped market. “It’s just common sense that with globalization, more and more witnesses will be located outside of the United States. At Optima Juris, we plan to be the best-positioned agency to capitalize on that trend – we are truly at the forefront of American small businesses deciding to go global to survive.”
