With more than 170 million smart phones bought last year and even more expected in 2011, we do see the need to make smart phone forensics top priority on our agenda
Needham Heights, MA (PRWEB) February 15, 2011
Oxygen Software today announces Oxygen Forensic Suite 2011, a major upgrade of the popular forensic software suite that gives investigators breakthrough ways to extract and analyze data from a smart phone of a suspect. Now experts can view detailed information about preinstalled and custom applications, including run time stamps and logins to corresponding online services; find out the location of the suspect by GPRS/3G connections; get passwords and other important data from dictionaries. The release adds support for 100+ new devices and about 50 minor changes. Law enforcement specialists can get the product for free.
"With more than 170 million smart phones bought last year and even more expected in 2011, we do see the need to make smart phone forensics top priority on our agenda," says Nickolay Golubev, marketing communications manager, Oxygen Software. "In response to this need, we are introducing Oxygen Forensic Suite 2011, which provides forensic experts with dedicated tools to collect and examine digital evidence from smart phones, from the new application data analysis section, to the tools for analyzing mobile dictionaries and connections."
Oxygen Forensic Suite 2011 introduces a new section called Application, which allows the investigator to view information about preinstalled and custom applications, such as their installation and run time stamps, logins and passwords to corresponding online services. Currently, supported services include YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, AOL, Flickr, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Blogger, ICQ, Yahoo!, Livejournal and others. Also it is possible to view the history of visited web pages and history of conversations over Skype, ICQ and other instant messengers. In certain cases the program makes it even possible to get geographic coordinates of the location when a particular application was launched. The Application section is available in the Analyst license and for Apple devices at this time.
The Dictionaries section is another novelty in version 2011. Working in a similar way as a keyboard logger, this tool captures all words entered by the suspect while typing messages and notes. Captured words can help the investigator to reveal passwords and other valuable data. The Dictionaries section also allows the expert to find out the usage frequency of each word, reveal the order words were entered and compose phrases of these words. The Dictionaries feature is available in the Analyst license for Apple, Android and Blackberry devices.
The developers also added the IP Connections tab that serves as a logical extension of the popular Wi-Fi connections section. On this tab, one can find out the location of the suspect by GPRS/3G connections and review such information as the history of router connections, router details (MAC address, IP address), provider name, region and more. Using the extracted IP data, the tool shows the location of a suspect on Google Mini Map.
Oxygen Forensic Suite 2011 offers a redesigned interface. Navigating between the sections, cases and phones has become easier and more convenient now with a new navigation system that resembles Windows Explorer. The old device tabs have been replaced by the Device and Cases panel where smart phones are grouped by cases. The user can drag and drop a device to add it to a case, edit device details and tag smart phones for quick search.
