With the introduction of the Ultipack® Void Containment System by Sealed Air Automation, distribution facilities can finally enjoy the best of both worlds - reduced packaging costs and extremely strong packages.
Ultipack® brings complete packaging automation to the processes of corrugated tray forming, product protection, and lidding. The most distinctive feature of the system is what Sealed Air describes as "void containment". A flexible corrugated wedge is automatically inserted into the filled tray, securely containing and protecting the items and eliminating the need for void fill material.
Since the wedge is typically half the cost of void fill material and the lidded tray makes for an extremely durable shipping container, Ultipack® reduces costs without compromising packaging performance.
In addition to being highly efficient, the Ultipack® void containment process is much simpler than alternative automated cartoning and void fill options.
1. Corrugated trays of any size are formed in the Tray Forming Module and fed into the picking line.
2. Once filled, trays are conveyed to the Wedging Module, where a corrugated wedge is automatically inserted and secured around the tray's contents.
3. Trays are then conveyed to the Lidding Module, where a lid is automatically placed and glued.
Strong, low cost packages are only the beginning, according to Sealed Air's Don Liebel. "Ultipack® increases throughput and reduces operating costs. It positively impacts other aspects of the business by reducing shipping costs, reducing or eliminating product damage, and giving consumers an attractive, easy opening, and curbside recyclable package."
The Ultipack® System can be integrated with all ERP/WMS system software and any warehouse equipment, including conveyors, printers, scales, and sorters. The system can also operate in stand-alone mode.
