British holidaymakers are continuing to enquire about and book cheap holidays to Turkey, according to new figures published this week, ahead of the World Travel Market in London next Month. The result of the research, which was undertaken by market research agency GfK, also shows that the popularity of holidays to Turkey has risen dramatically this summer.

Thomas Kempster, director of holiday experts says: “Over the last twelve months the interest in Turkey holidays has steadily risen, with Turkey named as the second most popular destination for UK travellers, while the growing popularity of holidays to Turkey has led to the country being named as one of the top five destinations for growth in the UK market.”

While Turkey’s tourism sector is predicted to expand by more than 12% over the next three years according to new research released by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Turkey’s popularity makes up part of an overall trend of growth in the European holiday market, with a number of other holiday destinations recording a rise in tourist numbers.

Kempster continues: “Holidays to Greece saw a 3% rise in tourists in August and September, showing that the Greek tourism industry is starting to recover following the economic and civil unrest that affected the country and prompted a tourism slump earlier this year. Despite initial expectation of a 10% to 13% drop in tourism revenue, the actual figure has turned out to be considerably lower at 7% to 8%, and advance bookings suggest that recovery is to continue into 2011, with more bookings expected from emerging markets like Israel and China.”
