As consumers become more internet savvy, the percentage of holidays booked on an independent basis is soaring. But are DIY holidays always the best choice asks

Package holidays wrap up the components of a holiday into one so everything is pre-arranged for you.

The internet is overtaking high street travel agency services at lightning speed. With thousands of cheap flights and low cost hotel bed banks online it's no surprise that thousands of people are abandoning package holidays in favour of creating their own mix 'n' match deals.

Price is an inevitable factor. Many people assume, without checking, that a DIY solution will always be cheaper than a package holiday because there's human interaction involved. But in many cases it simply isn't true. If you're wavering between an independently arranged and package holiday, package experts recommends consumers check the price of both options carefully before booking. have been busy researching the matter, checking the true costs of DIOY versus package holidays. “One good example is independently booked cheap Turkey holidays” explains Thomas Kempster, director of “We've compared the DIY cost of holidays to Turkey against packaged Turkey holidays and found that packages beat DIY prices almost every time. We've found the same with holidays to other popular destinations including Mallorca, Florida, Canary Islands and Greece.”

“Package holidays wrap up the components of a holiday into one so everything is pre-arranged for you.” adds Kempster. “We also recommend costing out the time you'll have to spend arranging and co-ordinating independent flights, accommodation and airport transfers. Once they know what's what many people find DIY simply isn't worth all the extra hassle!”

The most important advantage of package holidays is the financial protection you get when things go wrong. If your tour operator or airline goes bust ATOL's bonding guarantees are designed to make sure you don't lose out financially. In fact tour operators have a legal obligation to make sure you have somewhere to stay and can get home, so you shouldn't get stranded abroad.

The recent Icelandic volcano eruption is a classic case. Most independent holidaymakers found themselves stranded and abandoned, whereas most package holiday customers were properly looked after. Rosie Goldstone had booked cheap holidays to Turkey for the family on a package basis and was put up in a smart four star hotel for a week while the dust cleared. “We were treated really well so, against all the odds, we actually enjoyed our extended holiday!” In contrast her daughter Julie went DIY and had a dreadful time getting home from her cheap Turkey holidays. “I spent almost a week trapped in Turkey, camping out in the airport with two small kids. It was absolutely horrible.”

Unlike DIY deals, ATOL bonded travel companies are obliged to tell you in advance if the details of your holiday change. They have to provide you with an equivalent alternative, something better or a refund. And also unlike independent bookings, once you've paid your package holiday deposit, the price is fixed no matter how much currencies fluctuate.
