A recent study published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine evaluated platelet rich plasma therapy for knee arthritis. Over twenty patients received one injection of PRP into arthritis knees, and were then followed for a year. Most showed significant pain reductions and functional improvements, and three fourths showed no cartilage degradation on serial MRI scans.

PRP treatment involves a simple blood draw from the patient, which is then spun down rapidly in a centrifuge machine. The result is a layer of concentrated platelets and growth factors, which is the portion used to reinject into the problem area. Platelet rich plasma has been shown to be effective at calling in the body's stem cells.

With three professional sports leagues and World Anti Doping Agency approving of PRP useage, it has been gaining dramatically in popularity. Arizona Pain offers platelet rich plasma therapy for those with tendonitis such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) along with rotator cuff issues, ligament injuries and now knee arthritis.

"The treatment is really exciting, it's low risk and now multiple studies are showing it works well for tendon and ligament injury, inflammation conditions and now arthritis. It's not only for athletes, but for anyone dealing with a chronic pain issue," said Arizona Pain Network CEO David Greene.
