Green building leaders establish comprehensive offering to advance sustainable real estate impact.

Completed on July 1, 2012, the acquisition combines Paladino’s green building technical analysis leadership and real estate portfolio optimization expertise with S.D. Keppler’s strong signature building and advanced commissioning capabilities.

Paladino and Company (Paladino), a pioneering sustainability and green building consulting firm, announced that it has acquired Rockville, MD green building consulting firm S.D. Keppler & Associates (S.D. Keppler). The two firms have joined to establish a comprehensive consulting offering focused on elevating the prominence and impact of green real estate programs within business.

Completed on July 1, 2012, the acquisition combines Paladino’s green building technical analysis leadership and real estate portfolio optimization expertise with S.D. Keppler’s strong signature building and advanced commissioning capabilities. The newly integrated offering serves as a platform for expansion of the firm’s increasing activity within corporate real estate divisions and the building development community, as it helps portfolio owners derive business value from built assets and evolve towards more sustainable business models and practices in general.

The agreement also establishes a bicoastal presence for Paladino in response to growing demand for sustainable real estate expertise in the Eastern States of the U.S. among real estate developers, real estate investment trusts (REITs), real estate industry associations and other corporate building owners with headquarters and properties located on the East Coast, and especially in the Washington, DC area.

Paladino and S.D. Keppler have been strong collaborators since the early 1990s, maintaining a competitive but collegial relationship based on mutual respect, shared vision and client service philosophies.

Pladino and Company was founded in Seattle in 1994 by engineer and architect Tom Paladino. The company is particularly known for tying advanced building science approaches to business measures and outcomes, and for its early leadership in the development of the LEED® green building rating system. The firm helped PNC establish an award-winning green real estate program through sustainable architecture (resulting in 98 Green Branch® LEED certifications) and supported Marriott International’s positioning as a green hospitality leader through a cross-brand LEED Volume Certification program. Paladino also helped Verizon Wireless leverage LEED as a quality control process for its fast-paced retail expansion program.

S.D. Keppler & Associates was established in 2002 by environmental scientist and building HVAC, controls and commissioning expert Steve Keppler. The company rapidly established a leadership position by serving building owners such as Silverstein Properties, Federal Realty Investment Trust and Vornado Realty Trust. The firm is currently providing green building and commissioning services to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Silverstein Properties Inc. for the World Trade Center Towers 1 – 4, located in New York.

Paladino will retain its headquarters office in Seattle under the direction of Tom Paladino, who will now serve as CEO. Steve Keppler has been appointed President, reporting to Tom Paladino, and will manage the DC office and other East Coast regional business. The company expects to increase staff levels over next 12 months in response to growth driven by new client wins, including a recent contract awarded by The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) to help create more sustainable embassy buildings worldwide.
