Online jeweller Diamonds and Rings are retailers of diamond engagement rings, wedding rings, eternity rings and other diamond jewellery. All diamond rings are made to order and can be customised by precious metal and the company offers the less known palladium as an option alongside the more popular platinum, white gold and yellow gold.

“We have been offering palladium for a while now but have noticed that customers tend to shy away from this alternative. We’d like to help customers understand the benefits of this lesser known precious metal over the more widely used platinum and gold so that our customers can make an informed choice and also save money” says the company’s Director.

The ‘Metal Drop-down’ selection on the websites’ product pages includes 9ct white gold, 9ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold, rose gold, platinum and palladium. So what is palladium? Palladium has many of the properties of platinum but is less rare and so less expensive. It is also a lighter metal than platinum and as precious metals are valued by weight this also lowers the price. The recent rise in gold prices means that palladium is also cheaper than gold but one of the key benefits over white gold is that it is a silver coloured metal throughout.

The silver colour of this metal is important if considering white gold for jewellery. This is because white gold is made from yellow gold with a silver coloured metal added to it to produce an alloy. This mixture is not bright white in colour like platinum or palladium but has a yellow tone so the finished ring or jewellery is then plated with Rhodium, a silver coloured metal. The downside to this is that over time the rhodium plating wears off and the jewellery has to be re-plated. This is not the case with platinum or palladium but as platinum is a more expensive option, 18ct white gold is the usual alternative however, the benefits of platinum can be found with palladium but at a lower price than platinum or gold.

More useful information can be found on the Diamonds and Rings website including how to choose an engagement ring and advice when buying diamonds. “We are currently increasing the amount of customer information on all our types of jewellery as well as the characteristics of precious metals like palladium” continues Carli Onguc.
