The views alone make playing the course a magnificent experience, and the updates to the bunkers, greens, tees and new chipping areas have our members buzzing with anticipation and excitement.

The Palos Verdes Golf Club, overlooking the Pacific just southwest of Los Angeles, is currently undergoing an extensive $1.3 million golf course renovation. The work includes all new bunkers throughout, select new greens and green extensions, the addition of new chipping areas on every hole, select tree removals to optimize views, and a number of new back tees.

The classic course was originally designed in 1924 by William P. Bell, with George Thomas consulting. This well known team also designed and built the Riviera Country Club, Bel Air Country Club, the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club and the course at Ojai Valley Inn.

Palos Verdes Golf Club is one of the most impressive examples of their designs of the 1920’s, with extensive use of natural hazards and a premium placed on accuracy and shot-making, rather than length. The course takes full advantage of the wonderfully unique and varied terrain as barrancas, creeks, hills, and the prevailing westerly ocean breezes all play a factor. The restored ocean views create a spectacular setting as well, which were a noted highlight of the early design.

The course renovations are intended to improve the playability and interest of the course while maintaining the integrity of a truly classic design, while subsequently expanding the ocean views that were a hallmark of the design in the 1920’s. Steve Hockett, General Manager/COO, is confident that the Club will quickly build upon its reputation as one of the best challenges of golf anywhere in the area. “The views alone make playing this course a magnificent experience, and the updates to the bunkers, greens, tees and new chipping areas have our members buzzing with anticipation and excitement,” says Hockett. “Our Superintendent Pat Gradoville and his expert staff, along with a world-class team of consultants including Golf Course Architect Todd Eckenrode and his team at Origins Golf Design, who specialize in classic golf course design, and Oliphant Golf Course Construction, have all worked together to ensure that the end result is improved conditioning and playability, that stays true to the original treasured and historic design.”

The Palos Verdes Golf Club is expected to reopen in full form in early July 2013. Membership at Palos Verdes Golf Club is primarily for residents of Palos Verdes Estates, with limited availability to non-residents. The Club allows non-members to host their own company golf outings, charity golf fundraisers and golf tournaments during certain times. In fact, the Club offers packages that include all of the details, from tournament planning (pairings, scoring, etc.) to food and beverage. More information about membership and events can be found on the Club's website.
