ParknPool's October Facebook Promotion

It's great to see a small business use their social media presence for good. It is very refreshing!

The month of October is dedicated as both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. ParknPool, an online distributor of commercial grade furnishings and site amenities such as picnic tables, park benches, bleachers and playgrounds, commemorated both these causes by using their Facebook presence to spread the word and help raise money for the Susan G Komen for the Cure as well as the National Coalition against Domestic Violence.

According to recent cancer studies, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of a lifetime and in 2011 alone an estimated 230,480 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed. Though a man’s lifetime risk is slightly lower, they can also be affected by breast cancer. About 2,140 new cases regarding men were diagnosed in 2011. While there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors last year in the U.S., breast cancer deaths are higher than any cancer other than lung cancer. About 15% of women who get breast cancer have had a family member also diagnosed. ParknPool recognizes the desperate need for a cure.

Every 9 seconds in the U.S., according to domestic violence statistics gathered, a woman is assaulted or beaten – making domestic violence the leading cause of injury to women. This number is higher than car accidents, mugging and rapes combined. Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually and 1 in 5 teenage girls have even experienced violence on their own from an abusive boyfriend. On average, there are 8 million days of work missed in the US by domestic violence victims – the equivalent of 32,000 full time jobs. ParknPool recognizes that help for these victims is a necessity.

Realizing the power of social media, ParknPool decided to team up with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. During the month of October, for every new “like” on their FaceBook Corporate Page, ParknPool donated a dollar to the foundation of choice. They requested each new “fan” to complete a short survey stating which organization they would wish their dollar to be allotted and as a result raised over $250 dollars for the two causes.
