Artisan farmers craft Parmigiano Reggiano in the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia Romagna, and Modena in their entirety, and in portions of the provinces of Bologna, and Mantova, Italy. Known as “The King of Cheeses,” Parmesan is aged for an average of 24 months and must pass several strict standards in order for the cheese to be stamped with the official Parmigiano Reggiano certification mark.
Parmigiano Reggiano has been imported to the U.S. since the time of Thomas Jefferson, who had a deep appreciation and love for the cheese. Jefferson even went as far as visiting Italy personally to study how Parmesan cheese is made, and he brought back his knowledge of Parmesan to the U.S. where he served macaroni pie, the first macaroni and cheese, at the White House.
The website, Parmesan.com, will provide a myriad of resources, games, and tips to help you discover the secret to savory Italian cuisine. Specifically, the website will provide a number of chef-created and user-submitted recipes --from your favorite Italian classics to lesser known recipes that will surprise and delight you, like Parmesan ice cream. There will also be interactive games and historical information that will help you understand the true origin and magnificence of this unique cheese.
Visit Parmesan.com and connect on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for interactive learning opportunities and inspiration for delicious recipes.
