Patient-Centered Care Institute Launched

LINCOLN, Neb. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) May 6, 2008 -- The Patient-Centered Care Institute is dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practice of patient-centered care within healthcare.

The Institutes vision is simple: use research to identify what matters most to patients, teach caregivers to do those things well, make sure they do it every time and ensure patients have better quality of care experiences. That is the foundation of patient-centered care and the foundation of the Institute.

News Image Experiences like this real life example occur in hospitals every day: a vibrant 70-something man is in the hospital overnight for a standard procedure, but is required to wear a catheter while he recuperates. Already uncomfortable, he is determined to make the best of it. Shortly after the nursing shift change, he feels some brief pain then realizes he has wet himself. He presses the call button and is greeted pleasantly by the nurse, who says shell be there quickly to clean him up. She arrives, good-natured as she changes his bed sheets, and clothes and comforts him as he continually apologizes for the situation. Unfortunately, for an unknown reason, the catheter falls out several more times throughout the night, resulting in further bed wetting and humiliation. The nurse turns from empathetic to frustrated and accusatory to neglectful. After the fourth incident, the nurse ceases responding to the patients call and he spends the remainder of the night in a wet bed, embarrassed and discomforted.

Sometimes hospitals find out about these experiences; sometimes they dont. The reality is that they should never happen. The Patient-Centered Care Institute provides caregivers with tools and information that is up-to-date, practical and easy-to-implement and use; resources that can prevent the above situation from occurring.

Creating a dialogue around patient-centered care is the essence of the Patient-Centered Care Institutes programs and resources. The conversation is not just experts teaching practitioners; its about creating a dialog with all parties focused on improving the patient experience.
