Jostens’ Pause Before You Post™ is a public service program designed to encourage students to make smart decisions about personal publishing, particularly when using social media. A key focus of the program is to create an awareness and understanding of cyberbullying and recommend ways to help students avoid and protect themselves from online behavior that could be interpreted as cyberbullying.
Jostens’ Pause Before You Post program is based on research by recognized cyberbullying experts Dr. Justin W. Patchin and Dr. Sameer Hinduja, co-founders of the Cyberbullying Research Center (http://www.cyberbullying.us). Additionally, they have authored books and numerous articles and presented nationally and internationally on the topic. Throughout the month of October, Jostens will expand promotion of the Pause Before You Post™ campaign as a way to support schools, students and families during National Bullying Prevention Month.
The research center defines cyberbullying as “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.” Cyberbullying can be viewed as more complex than face-to-face bullying in that technology allows an unlimited number of people to participate in the harassment of a victim. While both types of bullying are detrimental to the person being bullied, cyberbullying may never cease because the bully has electronic access to the victim at all times and locations.
Through lesson plans, multimedia, student discussion guides, visual reminders and online resources, the Pause Before You Post campaign is designed to help students understand the issues and effects of cyberbullying. The materials feature a checklist of ways to avoid even unintentional involvement with cyberbullying including:
- Don’t post or send anything that can cause any embarrassment to others.
- Don’t become involved in online complaining or arguments.
- Don’t post or respond to comments when you are angry.
- Avoid guilt by association. Review images where you have been “tagged” and potentially posted alongside inappropriate images. Review and remove “friends” that are only acquaintances.

Each Pause Before You Post package also includes information to help families understand and reinforce online responsibility and safety.
