ControlScan, Inc. (, the leading provider of PCI compliance solutions exclusively focused on small merchants, today announced the latest enhancement to its PCI Dashboard reporting solution for acquirers. These changes allow acquirers to view the segmentation of merchant portfolios by payment application type and identify those that are compliant with the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS).

The PA-DSS compliance program, initiated by Visa and now maintained by the PCI Security Standards Council, is focused on eliminating prohibited data storage by establishing security requirements for vendors that develop and sell software-based payment applications. Effective July 1, 2010, Phase 5 of Visa’s payment application security mandate indicates that acquirers must ensure their merchants, VNPs and agents use only PA-DSS compliant applications.

“It would be nearly impossible to personally call all of our merchants to verify their payment application type in time for the new deadlines,” says Cole Gagnon, risk analyst, Nationwide Payment Services. “Now we can quickly identify which merchants aren’t using compliant applications and can focus our efforts on contacting them to update their systems.”

Hackers continue to focus on exploiting vulnerable payment applications. For this reason, it is imperative that acquirers have transparency around their customers’ payment application types and versions and are actively monitoring this information to help assess merchant risk. ControlScan’s robust reporting equips acquirers with the ability to view which merchants are and are not using certified payment application. At a glance, an acquirer can also access the processing methods used within its merchant portfolio.

“ControlScan’s enhancements to its PCI Dashboard reporting solution allow for improved consistency and quality of the payment application data supplied by merchants and yield more actionable reporting for acquirers,” says Joan Herbig, chief executive officer, ControlScan. “Making this information available to acquirers is a logical extension to our PCI compliance offering.”
