• Keep them simple

Use standard fonts and the minimum number of graphics necessary to convey the content effectively. Avoid the temptation to enhance appearance at the cost of time and bandwidth. Also, more users are relying on PDAs and handheld internet devices with limited screen sizes. Create your PDFs to be PDA-friendly.

• Avoid CPU-intensive formats and features

When possible, enable multi-thread and multi-core processing if your computer has either or both of those features. When creating a PDF, consider that a viewer may not be able to process PDFs without significant rendering time requirements. Further, excess screen clutter is not appreciated by most PDA users.

• Logically break single large documents to several smaller files

Smaller files load faster and are generally easier to track without resorting to dozens or hundreds of bookmarks. With handheld devices, scrolling a dozen pages – or less – is preferred to paging through hundreds of pages to get to the specific portion of the document they need to access.
