Dallas, TX (PRWEB) June 11, 2014
Commenting on a Fox 4 news report about an accident in Arlington that resulted in the death of an 8-month-old child, Dallas car accident lawyer Jason Stephens of Stephens Anderson & Cummings, LLP said today the incident serves as a tragic reminder that drivers have a responsibility always to follow traffic laws and avoid distractions and other dangerous driving behavior.
Stephens based his comments on a Fox 4 news article, “Baby in stroller hit by truck, killed; witnesses say car involved ran red light,” published May 29. According to Fox 4, the child was killed after a two-vehicle accident sent a pickup truck colliding toward pedestrians on the sidewalk waiting to cross the intersection.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” Stephens said. “Unfortunately, accidents involving pedestrians are all-too-common in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They often have horrific consequences, as this news report illustrates. While the cause of this accident remains under investigation, witness reports indicate driver negligence may have been a major contributory factor to the accident. Drivers must use extreme caution behind the wheel, especially when pedestrians are nearby.”
Fox 4 reports the accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Cooper Street and California Lane after the driver of a pickup truck traveling southbound on South Cooper Street was struck by a northbound car trying to make a left turn onto California Lane. The 8-month-old child and his father were waiting to cross the intersection when they were struck by the pickup truck, according to the article.
Witnesses to the accident told Fox 4 the car allegedly ran a red light at the intersection and hit the pickup truck, sending it careening toward the accident victims. Both drivers were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, Fox 4 said.
“Texas is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians,” Stephens said. “According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Texas had the second most pedestrian fatalities in 2012. That year, 478 pedestrians died in Texas. Only California had more pedestrian fatalities that year. In so many of these cases, drivers choose to engage in careless or reckless behavior on Texas. If they are acting negligently and cause an accident, they must be held accountable. It’s critical for accident victims to discuss their legal options with a lawyer immediately. By taking legal action, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Your actions also may help prevent similar accidents in the future.”
