Team Racks Up Seventh Grand Championship of 2010 to Qualify

Pellet Envy, a competition barbecue team led by America’s Pitmaster, Rod Gray, has earned an automatic bid to compete in the 23rd annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tennessee on October 22 and 23 of this year. Known as the Super Bowl of barbeque competitions, “The Jack” is the most prestigious two-day event in championship barbecue and includes more than eighty of barbecues top teams from across the United States and around the world.

Pellet Envy is the current national barbecue champion, holding the titles of Kansas City Barbeque Society 2009 Team of the Year and the best brisket cooks in the nation. The team is currently in a heated race with several of the nation’s top competitive barbecue teams to repeat as the KCBS Team of the Year.

Competitive barbecue teams like Pellet Envy battle for these prestigious automatic bids by accumulating seven or more Grand Championships in a season at sanctioned championships around the country, or by becoming Grand Champion at the Memphis in May, American Royal Open or Houston World’s Championship Bar-B-Que events.

This year marks the seventh season Pellet Envy will compete at “The Jack”. Qualifying by winning seven or more competitions is the most difficult way to receive an invitation to compete in Lynchburg. Pellet Envy has qualified to compete in “The Jack” by winning seven Grand Championships this season. This is the fourth year the team has received an automatic bid by winning at least seven Grand Championships – a feat matched by no other team in competitive barbecue history. 2010 will mark the seventh time Pellet Envy will have competed in “The Jack” since its founding nine years ago.

Pellet Envy’s consistent and noteworthy success in barbecue competitions includes a number of perfect scores in the individual competition categories – the team has been awarded more perfect scores than any of the top four competitors combined. Gray, known as the “Hardest Working Man in Barbecue”, and his Pellet Envy team traveled over 40,000 miles to 35 contests in 31 states last season. All of the KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) qualifying competitions are conducted through a blind judging process, which makes Pellet Envy’s ability to please the taste buds of barbecue enthusiasts in all parts of the country nothing less than remarkable.
