Thirteen New York Firefighters are Injured when Fire Trucks Collide

Two fire trucks rushing on the way to an emergency, unfortunately, have an emergency of their own. Luckily, the two speeding vehicles hit each other and not a person or a smaller vehicle, New York personal injury attorney David Perecman explains.

New Yrok, NY (PRWEB) November 4, 2009 -- New York personal injury attorneys know auto accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. Still it was surprising to hear of two fire trucks colliding early Saturday morning.

According to the New York Post, on a Brooklyn street slippery from the rain, the two fire trucks crashed, causing one of them to flip over. Several firefighters were reported injured after being pinned inside the wreckage.

"Judging from the speed of the vehicles it's amazing no one was killed or even critically injured," said New York personal injury attorney, David Perecman.

The two trucks were racing to a call with their lights and sirens on when one of the fire engines T-boned the other at the intersection, officials said.

The 35-ton fire engine that flipped on to its side partially landed on top of a parked minivan, crushing it.

The same Post article detailed that the two firemen cut out from the flipped truck were rushed to nearby hospitals. In all, 13 were hurt. The Fire Department said that 12 were hospitalized - four with serious leg injuries and eight with minor injuries. The other was treated at the scene. No civilians were hurt. The auto crash was ruled an accident by the FDNY but the cause is still being investigated.

Truck accidents, including fire trucks, are always extremely dangerous and often fatal in New York. Trucks are large and collisions at any speed can cause serious damage to people and vehicles. A fire truck crash has many implications, especially if the auto accident occurs when a fire engine is driving with sirens and lights. This means they are usually moving at high speeds.

In fact, Joyce Listhrop, whose minivan was hit by one of the fire trucks, told the New York Post she "would die" if she had been sitting in the parked van. And her statement is true because the driver's side of the hit van was completely crushed.

"If an accident had to happen on this day in New York, personal injury attorneys agree it's incredibly lucky a fire truck hit a fire truck and it wasn't a fire truck hitting a car, or a person. In this case, the vehicles were more or less evenly matched. But the fact alone that one truck turned the other one over can tell you how powerful and dangerous a truck can be, said Perecman.

According to 2008 New York truck accident statistics reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 112 large trucks and 524 light trucks were involved in fatal injury crashes.
