The National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) is a professional, member driven, education and credentialing organization for personal trainers and exercise science professionals. The NCSF Board for Certification has announced the completion of an all-inclusive industry-wide Role Delineation Study. Researchers have received and compiled significant input from key stakeholders of the profession including but not limited to facility management, industry experts, the academic community, and practicing certified personal trainers and strength coaches. To provide comprehensive data, the NCSF surveyed all key market segments to accurately define content domains and set competency standards in order to raise the bar in personal training and strength and conditioning.

The intended outcomes of the study are as follows: 1. Create an industry benchmark in professional practices and best position the profession for preventative medicine; 2. Provide measurable outcomes and evidence of best practices that are impervious to legal challenges; 3. Prevent legislative pressures by demonstrating established professional competency standards; 3. Determine competency differences between Certified Strength Coaches and Certified Personal Trainers; 4. Support developing and evolving academic programs; 5. Provide currently Certified Personal Trainers a voice in the professional development process; 6. Maintain appropriate career access by preventing exaggerated competency barriers while best serving the public; 7. Determined NCSF Personal Trainer certification exam content by the data received from this industry-wide, national survey and best serve the industry by preventing small sample biases or special-interest group influence.
