Assisi Veterinary Hospital encourages all pet owners to keep their pets healthy this spring, maintaining awareness for Heartworm. Heartworm Disease is caused by the blood-borne parasite, Dirofilaria Immitis. Adult heartworms live in the heart and pulmonary arteries of infected dogs, and sometimes cats as well. Females produce millions of offspring called microfilaria and live in the small vessels of the blood stream.

It is spread by an intermediate host, the mosquito. The mosquito is required for some stages of the heartworm cycle. When feeding, it ingests the microfilaria and then ultimately passes the larvae when it bits a dog or cat to feed. The larvae enter the bloodstream and goes to the heart and adjacent vessels. There they grow to maturity where they clog the heart and major blood vessels reducing the blood supply.

Sometimes symptoms don't show until the disease is well advanced. Some obvious signs are coughing, shortness of breath, weakness, nervousness and listlessness. There also maybe some weight loss and be in poor condition. There is a simple blood test to detect heartworms. Radiographs, EKG or Ultrasound may also be used in advanced cases. Once detected, dogs and cats can be treated to kill the heartworms.

It is best to prevent pets from getting heartworms in the first place. There are numerous heartworm preventatives available today. Call the compassionate professionals at Assisi Veterinary Hospital today at 516-256-0022 for more information.
