Hempstead, N.Y. area veterinary hospital reminds pet owners of some precautions to take during warm weather.

Assisi Veterinary Hospital offers tips for pet owners during the warm, humid summer weather.

With the hot summer months, pet owners should be aware of the danger of leaving their pet in a closed vehicle or out in the heat of the day. Either one of these situations could end with their pet suffering heatstroke. In addition, being exposed to a hair dryer for a long time, a poor ventilated environment i.e. dog house, or exercising a dog in hot conditions could also end with a pet suffering heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a common term for hyperthermia or elevated body temperature. Dogs cannot control their body temperature with sweating as people do, except for a small number of sweat glands in their footpads. They control their body temperature with panting. Certain breeds with a restricted airway, which are called brachycephalic dogs, such as pugs, boxers, and bulldogs are at high risk.

Symptoms of heatstroke are heavy panting and difficulty breathing. The tongue and mucous membranes appear red, saliva is thick and the dog may vomit. The dog’s temperature rises to 104 to 110 degrees.; they become unsteady and pass bloody diarrhea. As shock sets in, lips and mucous membranes turn gray. Collapse, seizures, coma and death ensue.

If heatstroke is suspected there should be immediate medical attention. Move the pet out of the heat and into a cool area. Cooling the pet with water from the hose or placing it in a cool water bath to help bring down their temperature. Placing a wet pet in front of a fan and placing a cool pack in their groin area may be helpful.
