Indian Head Animal Hospital Senior Health Care Program

Senior pets are prone to age-related diseases. Help keep your four legged family member healthy and happy with a complete medical checkup.

The Indian Head Animal Hospital is located in Fort Washington, Maryland, has a special Senior Health Care program for your aging cats and dogs. Pets over the age of 7 years are prone to age-related diseases. They are at the point in their lives that is equivalent to us at 50 years of age. With changing activity levels and metabolism, older dogs and cats may experience weight problems, heart disease, kidney or thyroid disease, dental problems or cancer. Regular exams for our senior pets are very important.

By early detection of health problems, we have a better opportunity to eliminate or slow their development, ensuring additional healthy, comfortable years for your pets. Additionally, a Senior Health Care Work-Up will allow us to determine baseline levels for your pet. Many pet owners see physical and behavioral changes as their pet ages and consider it just “old age”. Often, there are treatment options that will decrease suffering. Frequently, Senior Health work-ups reveal medical problems that otherwise would go undetected.

Our patients in our senior health care program are admitted for the day. Our doctors perform a complete and thorough physical exam, followed by appropriate laboratory tests such as an electrocardiogram, blood pressure measurement, chest and abdominal radiographs, Complete Blood Count, blood chemistries, thyroid testing and evaluation of stool and urine samples.

At the time of discharge, the doctor will discuss the test results and suggest any medications, supplements or dietary changes that would be beneficial.

To arrange for a complete or partial Senior Health Care Work-Up, or to obtain further information, please contact our office. Work-ups are performed only on week days, but we will work with you to make convenient arrangements.
