Looking for more space at home? The answer could be right under your nose or feet. “Finishing a basement is one of the best ways to add livable square footage to a home, while substantially increasing its value,” said Vincent Carneglia, owner of VCG Construction. With over 15 years of remodeling experience as a Philadelphia General Contractor, Vincent shares some advice on basement refinishing.
“Before getting started on a basement remodel project it is important to resolve any water or moisture problems,” said Vincent. This could determine the extent of a remodeling project. Make sure the basement is dry before beginning and determine if it will need waterproofing. Correcting water and drainage problems prior to the beginning of the project will prevent future disasters. It is also a good time to consider other environmental factors like temperature. Basements tend to be cool, decide if an alternate heat source is necessary to keep the basement comfortable for its intended use.
Lighting can be a crucial design element to any basement. Consider adding natural lighting and overhead lighting as well as task lighting. The addition of an egress window is a necessary addition to the basement, especially if there will be a bedroom addition, (check local building codes). An egress window provides a safe route out of the basement in case of a fire or other emergency. Many older homes were built without an egress window in the basement. Putting one in will dramatically increase the amount of light into the basement and make a provision for safety.
Basement remodeling can be functional or the fulfillment of a custom dream space. There are a variety of uses for more space at home, a bedroom and bathroom for guests, a playroom for children, a home office, a new home gym or an additional space to entertain guests complete with a wet bar or kitchen. “Clients are discovering the basement is a great place for a home theater, a bar area, including wine cellars with built in humidors for a cigar collection, due to the naturally dark and cool environment of the basement,” said Vincent.
