The Philadelphia Chapter of buildOn, a non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education, is celebrating Philadelphia Public High School youth for contributing over 12,000 hours of community service in Philadelphia this past school year. The celebration will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Philadelphia North Bowl (909 E. 2nd Street).
Proceeds from the celebration will support buildOn’s afterschool service programs in under-served Philadelphia public high schools. The event will include a silent auction, bowling, refreshments, and inspirational stories from students and buildOn supporters.
buildOn launched its Afterschool Service Program in Philadelphia in 2003. Since then, buildOn Philadelphia students have contributed hundreds of hours of service each week by tutoring children, feeding the homeless and volunteering at senior citizen homes. Every year, 30 Philadelphia buildOn students travel to help build schools in some of the poorest countries in the planet, including Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Senegal
buildOn programming keeps students safe, engages them academically and develops leadership skills in the vulnerable hours after school. Through buildOn', Philadelphia students realize their ability to change lives, including their own. With 94 percent of buildOn seniors graduating and going on to college, buildOn is inspiring the City of Brotherly Love’s next generation of teachers, community activists and business leaders.
"The Annual Year End Celebration brings students together from across Philadelphia to celebrate their amazing accomplishments during the past year and thank those who have given so much to make our programs possible,” said Skyler Badenoch, buildOn’s Director of Development, “This event is about paying tribute to the students who have worked so hard this year to become local change agents in their community and abroad.”
buildOn empowers our Philadelphia students to work collaboratively with those in communities across the globe where access to education is limited by inadequate infrastructure, financial resources, distance, gender, or other factors. By traveling and partnering with local students and parents to build schools, buildOn students gain invaluable skills and experiences while tangibly improving children’s educational opportunities. Through buildOn, Philaelphia students become strong advocates for equity, both in their own communities and around the world.
